Burnett: Dr Daniel C. Burnett is the Executive Director of Enterprise Ethereum Alliance\, a recognised blockchain leader and prominent standards expert. With over two decades of experience in web and Internet standards\, Daniel has a stellar reputation as an action-oriented leader helping to build ecosystems for blockchain and the standards that drive interoperability and adoption. He has served as a Blockchain Standards Architect at ConsenSys\, an Ethereum-focused blockchain organisation where he developed standards that enabled businesses to take advantage of blockchain’s potential.\n\n  \n\nMs Jamilya Kamalova: Jamilya Kamalova is a researcher at Kleros.io\, specialising in decentralised dispute resolution. She is a PhD candidate in Blockchain & Law\, affiliated with Kleros.io\, Blockchaingov.eu\, and Université Paris 2 Panthéon Assas. Jamilya has been accepted for the Adam Smith Fellowship\, a co-sponsored program of the Mercatus Center and Liberty Fund\, Inc.\, for 2023-2024. She is also a visiting scholar at HKU Faculty of Law for fall 2023/2024. Jamilya’s academic research encompasses blockchain governance\, decentralised dispute resolution\, constitutionalisation\, and legal regulatory regimes.\n\n  \n\nDr Tom McDonald: Tom is a media anthropologist who is dedicated to using ethnographic engagement to gain a deeper understanding of how digital technologies\, media\, and material culture are transforming various aspects of human life in China and beyond. He joined the Department of Sociology at HKU in August 2015\, and prior to that\, he was a Research Associate at the Department of Anthropology\, University College London. Tom’s research has increasingly focused on economic concerns\, particularly in light of the rapid convergence between digital money and media in China and the wider world. He has recently completed two major projects in this area. The first project examines the adoption of digital payment and consumer finance platforms and their impact on financial subjectivities. The second project explores the potential of digital money in facilitating everyday cross-boundary money transactions. In this talk\, I will start with a literature review on cultural heritage crowdsourcing. A preliminary conceptual framework will be presented to illustrate the intellectual development of this field. Later\, I will report two empirical investigations to discuss the critical issues regarding the sustainability of cultural heritage crowdsourcing projects. The first study will use the machine learning approach to explore imbalanced volunteer engagement in a well-known project. The second study will use the fsQCA approach to examine the configuration effects affecting the sustainability of cultural heritage crowdsourcing projects. \n  \nBio: Yuxiang Chris Zhao is a professor in the School of Information Management at Nanjing University\, China. His research interests include human-computer interaction\, health informatics\, and digital humanities. His publications have appeared in some leading journals and conferences as Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology\, Information Processing & Management\, Journal of Documentation\, International Journal of Information Management\, Information Systems Frontiers\, Internet Research\, Computers in Human Behavior\, Journal of Medical Internet Research\, International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction\, Online Information Review\, Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services\, ICIS\, ASIS&T\, iConference\, PACIS\, JCDL\, CHIIR\, HCI International\, and among others. His Google Scholar citation count is over 3\,900 and the h-index is 24. Dr. Zhao has been awarded the distinguished young scholars in Chinese Humanities & Social Science domain in 2016. He is now serving on the editorial boards of ARIST\, JASIST\, IP&M\, Library Trends\, Journal of Data and Information Science\, and Data and Information Management. Currently\, Dr. Zhao is serving as Asia-Pacific Chapter Chair-elect of the Association for Information Science and Technology.

SUMMARY:Transdisciplinarity And The Terrestrial: Thinking Critically With Critical Zones
DESCRIPTION:Following its adoption by the US earth sciences community at the turn of the century\, the concept of the ‘critical zone’ has been central to a so-called ‘terrestrial turn’ in the arts as well as the sciences. Originally defined as the “heterogeneous\, near-surface environment in which complex interactions involving rock\, soil\, water\, air\, and living organisms regulate the natural habitat” (Jordan et al.\, 2001: 2)\, the concept has been engaged by thinkers across the environmental sciences and humanities to consider questions of ‘habitability’. \n  \nIn this talk\, David will reflect on this circulation as a contribution to the uptake and use of the critical zone concept in transdisciplinary enquiry. What does this circulation tell us about dialogues between the arts and the sciences? And how can transdisciplinary enquiry engaging the concept of the critical zone be reflexive about the power relations underlying how the earth’s surface has been mapped\, explored\, and exploited? \n  \nThe talk will address ways in which the concept has been differently defined\, framed\, and situated around the world\, reflecting on the history of ‘critical zone observatories’ in the US\, Europe\, and China\, and the concept’s uptake in the arts and humanities inspired by the work of Bruno Latour. \n  \nDavid Edwards \nPhD Candidate\, The University of Glasgow \nDavid Edwards is a human and environmental geographer with a background in Sinology. In dialogue with political ecology\, postcolonial science and technology studies\, and the environmental humanities\, his PhD research addresses the translation and transfiguration of the ‘critical zone’ concept around the world\, with a focus on Greater China. David is based at the University of Glasgow and has been a visiting researcher at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP). These stories can help students to understand complex and abstract concepts by allowing them to immerse themselves and be part of it. Teachers can create interest-provoking and compelling cases and scenarios that will enable the students to reflect on their learning and perception to judge and act on the situation. However\, creating automated non-linear cases can be challenging and time-consuming. In this workshop\, we will use an open-source storytelling app called Twine to create these scenarios that can be customised to your context. DESCRIPTION:Title of Lecture: Navigating Globalization: 21st Century Survival Skills & the Future of the University \nSpeaker: Prof Matt Sparke\, Executive Director of Global and Community Health\, University of California\, Santa Cruz \nIn conversation with:\nProfessor Ian Holliday\, Vice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning)\, HKU\nProfessor Gray Kochhar-Lindgren\, Director of the Common Core\, HKU \n  \nThe Common Core Distinguished Lecture\, which celebrates our 10th Year Anniversary\, will be given by Professor Matt Sparke\, Executive Director of Global and Community Health\, Department of Politics\, at the University of California-Santa Cruz. Professor Sparke\, who also served as the Programme External Examiner for the Core\, will help us think together about how students and colleagues can best navigate the turbulence of globalization; how the University as a future-oriented institution might best respond; and how we might all develop more nuanced capacities not only for survival\, but for the emergence of a new flourishing of contemporary life. \nThe session is open to the public. Join us and register today. \n  \n  \nAbout the Speaker: \nMatt Sparke is Professor of Politics and Executive Director of Global and Community Health at the University of California Santa Cruz.  His work concerns the changing geography of politics and citizenship in the context of globalization\, including their implications for global health in particular. His recent research has been focused on what he calls ‘biological sub-citizenship’ in the context of  health challenges such as COVID and the political-economic forces that intensify the damage that they inflict on society.  One example of this is his current work on the copathogenesis of COVID as a syndemic\, including all the exclusions from immunization created by the patent-based monopolies on vaccine IP.  More links to his publications can be found at his USCS website. \n

DESCRIPTION:The Common Core in collaboration with our HK Learning Partner Friday is hosting a series of Refreshers in May for any student or staff looking to de-stress and just play around with art. \nIn these sandbox sessions\, you are welcome to come freely create and experiment with a mix of available materials and tools to make anything you want. The space will be filled with different inspirations such as images\, music\, lighting and sound\, and even if you are not sure what to do\, you can take a walk inside and look around. All that is required is a desire to play and relax. No experience with art is required\, but if you’re artistically inclined and are in the mood to make\, come along as well! \n  \nSession 1: Jamming\, improvisation\, freedom (Art Jamming with Music)\nExperimenting with color and light on paper-covered objects.
