Professor Sparke\, who also served as the Programme External Examiner for the Core\, will help us think together about how students and colleagues can best navigate the turbulence of globalization; how the University as a future-oriented institution might best respond; and how we might all develop more nuanced capacities not only for survival\, but for the emergence of a new flourishing of contemporary life. \nThe session is open to the public. Join us and register today. \n  \n  \nAbout the Speaker: \nMatt Sparke is Professor of Politics and Executive Director of Global and Community Health at the University of California Santa Cruz.  His work concerns the changing geography of politics and citizenship in the context of globalization\, including their implications for global health in particular. His recent research has been focused on what he calls ‘biological sub-citizenship’ in the context of  health challenges such as COVID and the political-economic forces that intensify the damage that they inflict on society.  One example of this is his current work on the copathogenesis of COVID as a syndemic\, including all the exclusions from immunization created by the patent-based monopolies on vaccine IP.  More links to his publications can be found at his USCS website. \n

SUMMARY:Student Sharing Session: A Community of Practice: The Value of Virtual Exchanges and Internships (Student Learning Festival)
DESCRIPTION:What does civic leadership mean in the digital age? What are the social problems that concern young people in Hong Kong and Birmingham? How can civic leadership developed in exchanges and internships help to address these issues? \nJoin us for a Community of Practice sharing session between students from the University of Hong Kong Common Core and the University of Birmingham Liberal Arts and Natural Sciences (LANS). Students will share their experiences working on social problems within a placement learning experience and the challenges of a dominantly virtual environment – either in virtual internships or caused by the pandemic. \nThe interactive session will include sharing\, generating ideas\, and developing possible standards and remedies. The outcome of the session is to formulate guidelines for students in online placement environments and how educators/ administrators can more effectively support students on virtual placements.

DESCRIPTION:What\, in our time\, does it mean to “communicate” effectively? Why\, for students\, is enhancing communication skills absolutely essential?  \nMany undergraduate courses teach content but have assessment tasks which test both students’ knowledge of content and how they communicate this. Examples of the communication assessments are an essay\, a report\, an oral presentation\, a poster\, or a video. The CIC (Communication-Intensive- Courses) initiative promotes the teaching and assessment of communication skills alongside content. In this presentation\, we will first provide a summary of the communication assessments and what we have learned from the 100+ courses we have badged so far as part of the CIC initiative. SUMMARY:Student Workshop: Students-for-Change: The SDGs and Daily Life in Hong Kong
DESCRIPTION:The world is home to the largest generation in the history of young people between the ages of 15 and 24 years\, adding up to 1.8 billion. Close to 90 percent of the youth live in developing countries\, where they constitute a large proportion of the population (UN Youth Strategy). \nConnected to each other like never before and facing incredible challenges\, young people want to and already contribute to the resilience of their communities\, proposing innovative solutions\, driving social progress and inspiring political change\, in urban as well as rural contexts. Young people constitute a tremendous and essential asset worth investing in\, opening the door to an unparalleled multiplier effect. \nHow can the youth help to solve chronic\, complex problems or achieve meaningful goals in Hong Kong? \nIn this session we’ll explore the SDGs that are important in Hong Kong\, and suggest ways to use Systems Thinking to solve some of the critical sustainability issues. \nSystems Thinking helps to reveal the big picture and emphasizes that in order to optimize the performance of the entire system\, people need to move from trying to optimize a single part of the system to improve the relationships between its constituent parts. When it comes to Hong Kong’s SDG challenges\, Systems Thinking can help  to find the leverage points which can help to address large issues by small but meaningful actions\, \nThis workshop will cover some of the foundations (what systems thinking is\, why and when it is needed) and will introduce a simple systems maps exercise about Hong Kong’s sustainability issues in groups. SUMMARY:[Postponed] Origins of Cinema & Preserving Film Heritage: Seminar and Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:After careful consideration of the health and safety of our participants and partners under the emergence of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 virus in the community—and after consultations with our HKU partners—we have made the difficult decision to postpone this event yet a later date.\n  \nMotion pictures were invented in 1895. Yet earliest attempts to collect and preserve film only began in the 1930s in Europe and the United States of America. Due to neglect\, natural disasters\, wars & other socio-economic reasons\, the survival rate of early films is extremely low. Archival institutions around the world believe that only half of the films made before the 1950s survive. \nIn this seminar\, Gladys Lau and Aki Kung from the Reel to Reel Institute (RTRI) will introduce the history and technological development of cinema: from black and white to colour; from silent to talkies\, and the properties of the most important and fascinating entity－celluloid film\, the carrier of moving images. Yan is the first ethnic Chinese playwright awarded by the Berliner Festspiele Theatertreffen Stückemarkt om 2016\, TV host of Literature Night series produced by RTHK. He is currently the House Author of Germany Nationatheater Mannheim (2021-2022). \nMiss Wong Ka-Ying \nWong Ka-ying is an artist and writer based in Hong Kong. She received her BFA degree at The Chinese University of Hong Kong in 2013 and obtained her M.Phil. in Visual Arts at Hong Kong Baptist University in 2021. A keen observer of the art community and society\, Wong critically reflects on social\, cultural and gender issues today through a wide range of platforms from performance to social media. A passionate writer\, curator and arts educator\, Wong has been taken part in various public sharings\, seminars\, panel discussions and talks. \nMiss Sonia Wong \nBased in Hong Kong\, Sonia Wong now teaches gender and culture-related subjects at the Gender Studies Programme of the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Her research interests include lesbian identity\, female sexuality\, film\, and new media. She is the founder of Reel Women Hong Kong\, the first and only independent film festival in Hong Kong devoted to the promotion of female-created films and artworks\, as well as gender equality and awareness\, in society. SUMMARY:A Minute Something Else Enters - Pandemics\, Violence and Mental disorders: What Can We Learn from 1968 and 2020?
DESCRIPTION:In 1968\, the “Hong Kong Flu” killed an estimated one to four million people globally. The epidemic broke out in the year the United States and the world endured a series of cataclysmic episodes of political violence. A rare phenomenon was observed concerning the mental consequences after contracting deadly influenza. Newspaper reports exaggerated the anxiety already occurring a half-century ago regarding schizophrenic cases possibly caused by Spanish flu and coloured this with racialized prejudice during Cold War. In the same year\, Hong Kong just came out from a months-long nightmare of large-scale riots between pro-Communists and the colonial government. With psychiatric sciences still embryonic\, experts from World Federation for Mental Health gathered in Hong Kong to discuss the topic of “how to live with violence.” A half-century on\, history repeated against the menace of COVID-19. The pandemic incurred global discrimination against Asian populations. While multiple studies have concluded adverse effects of the pandemic to the mental well-being among citizens\, neither root cause analyses\, nor effective solutions were offered by professionals. Currently\, Harry is an Associate Professor teaching at National Cheng Kung University\, Taiwan. He is also an Honorary Associate Professor at LKS Faculty of Medicine\, The University of Hong Kong\, and an Early Career Fellow of Hong Kong Academy of Humanities. DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Adrian Lam\, Common Core Course Tutor and Research Group Member \nThis contemporary world is no stranger to crises of all kinds\, for instance\, the outbreak of the COVD-19 pandemic since late 2019. Nonetheless\, the higher education sector has been regrettably slow and stagnant in the wake of these crises. Lamentably\, the contemporary higher education sector could and should contribute in many ways\, but have failed to do so. This presentation will mainly discuss three aspects of higher education – curriculum design\, learner empowerment\, and interdisciplinarity – arguing what went wrong and what should be further changed. In particular\, the presentation will also consider the potentials of the Common Core Curriculum at the University of Hong Kong in leading and facilitating the changes. All these transformations will be essential in shaping a more sustainable and resilient higher education system under the “new normal”. \nAdrian Lam graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a Master of Education in Curriculum and Pedagogy\, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education in Secondary English\, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in English Studies and Politics and Public Administration. The state of “new normal” spanned over the notion of living a normal life\, it brought deformation amongst the public realm and personal life as well as an institutionalized atmosphere of dissension. Charles and Ian will lead us through contemplation on the histories of pandemics. We will delve into architectural spaces in pandemic events\, impacted by the overflow of an invisible disease\, altered spatial design\, urban fabric and materials in cities. He received his PhD degree in architectural history and theory from the University of Hong Kong Department of Architecture\, and a diploma from the AA School of Architecture in London. He is a member of the Docomomo Hong Kong. His research explores the history of modern architecture in East and Southeast Asia\, the material culture and history of Shanghai plaster\, as well as the conservation and revitalization design of historical built heritage. \nMr Ian Tan \nIan Tan is pursuing his PhD studies in Architectural History at the University of Hong Kong. His research examines the circulation of iron architecture in colonial port cities\, particularly Singapore and Hong Kong\, foregrounding the material as a key proponent of modernity which transformed the way people lived\, worked\, and socialised at the turn of the century. SUMMARY:Photography Exhibition: Women in Science
DESCRIPTION:Common Core is proud to support the HKU Women in Science and Engineering (HKU WISE) group with the upcoming exhibition by photographer Laura Simonsen titled Women in Science\, to be held at the Main Library. Laura will exhibit photographs of female scientists from HKU’s Faculty of Science. \nThe exhibition commemorates 2020 as the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage in America and follows on from the exhibition “100 Years of Women’s Suffrage in America” (on display at the HKU Main Library)\, which tells the lives of eight notable suffragists in the movement: Susan B. Anthony\, Elizabeth Cady Stanton\, Mary Church Terrell\, Daisy Lampkin\, Carrie Chapman Catt\, Lucy Stone\, Sojourner Truth\, and Lucretia Mott. Beginning in the mid-19th century\, successive generations of women’s suffrage supporters worked tirelessly to achieve what many Americans considered a radical change in the Constitution – guaranteeing women the right to vote.  By spotlighting these eight figures who played key roles in the struggle for women’s suffrage\, together with the progress for gender equality within the field of science\, the exhibit highlights the effort of women to establish a landscape for greater equality. \nThe exhibition will run for the entire month of September 2021.
