SUMMARY:HKU-Cambridge Intercultural Communication Workshop for STEM Students
DESCRIPTION:The Centre for Languages and Inter-Communications (CLIC) at the University of Cambridge will offer a 3-hour intercultural communications workshop for HKU STEM students. Participants will have opportunities to reflect on their own communication style and the challenges posed by collaborative work across borders\, as well as network with students in the UK. The workshop is part of Common Core’s Future Readiness initiative to build the workforce of the future. \nDate/ Time: \nWednesday\, January 26\, 2022\n5:00 PM to 8:00 PM (HKT)\nOnline via Zoom \n  \nAvailable for all undergraduate students enrolled in STEM-related programmes. \nRegister now at https://forms.gle/NBWwaYsYdbLC1Ugf9. Limited spaces are available. \nZoom link will be sent to you upon confirmation of your successful selection. \n  \nMore about the workshop: \n“Global mindset\,” “cultural intelligence\,” “intercultural competence” … no matter how you want to call the skills that are necessary to successfully interact with people who might not see the world like you due to culture\, geography\, background\, age or other factors\, they are paramount in the industry. Engineers and scientists need to be experts in their field (hard technical skills) but without the ability to influence\, negotiate\, build trust\, lead\, communicate ideas to different audiences (soft skills\, also referred to as power skills in a recent report)\, projects have a much smaller chance of succeeding. When in an intercultural setting\, have you ever struggled with your peers’ style of communication\, wondered why some people seem to use more formal language\, be more direct than others\, or perhaps less flexible with time than you are accustomed to? Culture plays a big part in how we communicate and enhancing communication is so much more than choosing to speak the same language. \nIn addition\, remote learning mode brings further complications to the equation. The challenges of video conferencing such as the ‘Zoom fatigue\,’ the caveats of written communication (emails or text messages)\, or practicalities of working together across different time zones\, add some extra pressure on the already vulnerable intercultural communication. \nIn this new pilot workshop in partnership with the University of Cambridge CLIC\, we will allow 10 students from each institution to take part in an interactive session in which you will have opportunities to reflect and learn further about the following topics: \n\nWhat and why can go wrong in international collaboration\nWhat is culture and how it goes far beyond nationality\nWhat are culture dimensions including group vs. personal preferences\nWhat is intercultural competence and how to become immediately more effective in intercultural communication\nWhat is good practice for successful remote collaboration

SUMMARY:[Postponed] Origins of Cinema & Preserving Film Heritage: Seminar and Film Screening
DESCRIPTION:After careful consideration of the health and safety of our participants and partners under the emergence of the Omicron variant of COVID-19 virus in the community—and after consultations with our HKU partners—we have made the difficult decision to postpone this event yet a later date.\n  \nMotion pictures were invented in 1895. Yet earliest attempts to collect and preserve film only began in the 1930s in Europe and the United States of America. Due to neglect\, natural disasters\, wars & other socio-economic reasons\, the survival rate of early films is extremely low. Archival institutions around the world believe that only half of the films made before the 1950s survive. \nIn this seminar\, Gladys Lau and Aki Kung from the Reel to Reel Institute (RTRI) will introduce the history and technological development of cinema: from black and white to colour; from silent to talkies\, and the properties of the most important and fascinating entity－celluloid film\, the carrier of moving images. RTRI will also discuss how this delicate medium of art aged and decayed over time\, and the physical\, photochemical and digital methods practised by archivists and conservators to restore film heritage for long term preservation and greater public access. \nA rare 16mm copy of one of the earliest silent comedies of Charlie Chaplin will also be shown\, along with a live music accompaniment by local musician Bunn Lau\, to recreate the viewing experience of silent cinema in the early days. \nAbout Reel to Reel Institute \nA non-profit organisation founded in 2018 that aims at promoting film preservation\, and wider access of audio-visual heritage in Hong Kong by delivering public screenings\, publications\, education programmes and digitisation/restoration projects. \nRegistration \nTo attend\, please register your interest here https://hkuems1.hku.hk/hkuems/ec_hdetail.aspx?ueid=79087 \nAll HKU students and staff are welcome!

SUMMARY:Film Screening: The Exemplar + Centenary Commemoration
DESCRIPTION:“A thought of hatred must be destroyed by a more powerful thought of love” \n  \nThe film “The Exemplar” is about the life of  ‘Abdu’l-Bahá Abbás (1844-1921)\, a Persian philosopher\, spiritual leader and central figure of the Bahá’í Faith who promoted teachings of peace\, unity\, gender equality and religious harmony to audiences throughout the Middle East\, Europe and North America. “A thought of hatred must be destroyed by a more powerful thought of love”\, he taught. \nThe film recounts how his example has inspired people from all over the world to overcome their prejudices\, to heal disunity in their communities\, and to strive for peace and harmony in service to humanity. At a time when many communities and countries around the world are deeply divided and many are in despair about their future\, this film\, produced to commemorate the centenary of the passing of  ‘Abdul-Bahá\, aims to kindle the spirit of love\, unity and service to humanity in the hearts of its audiences. \nProf. David A. Palmer (Hong Kong Institute for the Humanities and Social Sciences; Department of Sociology\, The University of Hong Kong) will moderate the introductory and Q&A sessions of the event. \n  \nRegistration is REQUIRED: https://bit.ly/TheExemplar (DDL: Nov 25\, 2021) \n  \nMore about The New Mindscape: https://asiar.hku.hk/the-new-mindscape/

SUMMARY:A Minute Something Else Enters - Pandemics\, Violence and Mental disorders: What Can We Learn from 1968 and 2020?
DESCRIPTION:In 1968\, the “Hong Kong Flu” killed an estimated one to four million people globally. The epidemic broke out in the year the United States and the world endured a series of cataclysmic episodes of political violence. A rare phenomenon was observed concerning the mental consequences after contracting deadly influenza. Newspaper reports exaggerated the anxiety already occurring a half-century ago regarding schizophrenic cases possibly caused by Spanish flu and coloured this with racialized prejudice during Cold War. In the same year\, Hong Kong just came out from a months-long nightmare of large-scale riots between pro-Communists and the colonial government. With psychiatric sciences still embryonic\, experts from World Federation for Mental Health gathered in Hong Kong to discuss the topic of “how to live with violence.” A half-century on\, history repeated against the menace of COVID-19. The pandemic incurred global discrimination against Asian populations. While multiple studies have concluded adverse effects of the pandemic to the mental well-being among citizens\, neither root cause analyses\, nor effective solutions were offered by professionals. This talk will try to answer: why is it so? \n“A Minute Something Else Enters” is a community project collaborated with the teaching staff at LKS Faculty of Medicine\, The University of Hong Kong\, aimed to explore the history of pandemic across centuries of time within the boundary in Hong Kong. The project anticipates audio-guided immersive theatre at HKU and surrounding in 2022 January\, in addition to three online to offline sharing sessions to swarm out into the interfaces of the pandemic\, urban and daily life with the lens of architecture\, medical profession and literature. “A Minute Something Else Enters” is supported by MEHU\, HKU Libraries and Common Core. \nSpeaker: Dr Harry Yi-Jui Wu \nHarry Yi-Jui Wu is a historian of medicine. He was trained in medicine in Taiwan before obtaining DPhil in modern history at the University of Oxford. His first book\, Mad by the Millions: Mental Disorders and the Early Years of the World Health Organization\, was published by MIT Press in 2021. Currently\, Harry is an Associate Professor teaching at National Cheng Kung University\, Taiwan. He is also an Honorary Associate Professor at LKS Faculty of Medicine\, The University of Hong Kong\, and an Early Career Fellow of Hong Kong Academy of Humanities. SUMMARY:The Critical Engagement of Higher Education with Future Crises
DESCRIPTION:Speaker: Adrian Lam\, Common Core Course Tutor and Research Group Member \nThis contemporary world is no stranger to crises of all kinds\, for instance\, the outbreak of the COVD-19 pandemic since late 2019. Nonetheless\, the higher education sector has been regrettably slow and stagnant in the wake of these crises. Lamentably\, the contemporary higher education sector could and should contribute in many ways\, but have failed to do so. This presentation will mainly discuss three aspects of higher education – curriculum design\, learner empowerment\, and interdisciplinarity – arguing what went wrong and what should be further changed. In particular\, the presentation will also consider the potentials of the Common Core Curriculum at the University of Hong Kong in leading and facilitating the changes. All these transformations will be essential in shaping a more sustainable and resilient higher education system under the “new normal”. \nAdrian Lam graduated from the University of Hong Kong with a Master of Education in Curriculum and Pedagogy\, a Postgraduate Diploma in Education in Secondary English\, as well as a Bachelor of Arts in English Studies and Politics and Public Administration. He has extensive research and teaching experience in both the disciplines of education and political science. \nAll HKU staff and students are welcome \nPlease register here

SUMMARY:A Minute Something Else Enters - Architecture and Constraint: Architectural space derived in pandemic time frame
DESCRIPTION:The latest Covid-19 pandemic put forward waves of “new normal” in every aspect of life. The state of “new normal” spanned over the notion of living a normal life\, it brought deformation amongst the public realm and personal life as well as an institutionalized atmosphere of dissension. Charles and Ian will lead us through contemplation on the histories of pandemics. We will delve into architectural spaces in pandemic events\, impacted by the overflow of an invisible disease\, altered spatial design\, urban fabric and materials in cities. These impacts manifested control of bodies by architectural space\, from conceptual perpetuation to real-life constraints. \nMr Charles Lai \nCharles Lai is a British architect and researcher of the history and conservation of Hong Kong and Asian modern architecture. He received his PhD degree in architectural history and theory from the University of Hong Kong Department of Architecture\, and a diploma from the AA School of Architecture in London. He is a member of the Docomomo Hong Kong. His research explores the history of modern architecture in East and Southeast Asia\, the material culture and history of Shanghai plaster\, as well as the conservation and revitalization design of historical built heritage. \nMr Ian Tan \nIan Tan is pursuing his PhD studies in Architectural History at the University of Hong Kong. His research examines the circulation of iron architecture in colonial port cities\, particularly Singapore and Hong Kong\, foregrounding the material as a key proponent of modernity which transformed the way people lived\, worked\, and socialised at the turn of the century. He is trained as a conservation architect and curator and previously served in these roles with the National Heritage Board of Singapore. \nDate: Nov 10\, 2021 \nTime: 7:30 – 9pm \nVenue: Lower basement\, Hong Kong Art Centre\, Eric Hotung Studio\, 2 Harbour Road\, Wan Chai\, Hong Kong \nIn association with Cultural Masseur\, HKAC 文化按摩師 Cultural Masseur \nSpeaker: Charles Lai & Ian Tan \nLanguage: Cantonese and English \nRegister at: https://forms.gle/Pp9Tt2nMvCZpfSAY9 \nFacebook event link: https://www.facebook.com/1349072538454919/posts/5225445314150936/?d=n
