He visited Manila in January for a fieldtrip\, where he got the chance to meet different experts and students at the School of Archaeology at University of Philippines Diliman (UPD). He is interested in German culture and language\, broader histories and cultural studies\, and how science can impact his studies in history\, the humanities\, and the arts. \nClavel visits Indonesia \nClavel Lo Lok Yin is a Year 1 student majoring in Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc) in Global Health and Development. She visited Surabaya\, Indonesia\, during Reading Week in March. During her trip\, she explored the historical sites and museums which deepened her understanding of human evolutionary history. Anthropologists at Airlangga University offered valuable insights in how skeletal biology and archaeology are practiced in island Southeast Asia. \nTatfeef visits Australia \nTatfeef Haque is a first-year BSc (Biochemistry) student. In June\, he went to Darwin\, Australia\, to attend the 10th World Archaeological Congress. He presented his research project that utilized bibliometrics to understand recent publication trends. This year’s congress included other sessions on community engagement\, human evolution\, bioarchaeological ethics\, experimental archaeology\, and prehistoric trade routes across the Indian Ocean. \nDr. Michael Rivera \nDr. Rivera is a Lecturer at the Faculty of Social Sciences. He teaches multiple BASc and Common Core courses\, including his flagship course on archaeology and biological anthropology. He is currently undertaking the Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice course and pursuing a Higher Education Fellowship\, concentrating on pedagogies of care\, research-integrated and practical teaching\, and education around public engagement skills. \n  \nWe look forward to seeing you! Drawing upon Weavings: Multisensory Performance\, Pragmatic Technologies\, and Future Readiness—a recent project in India that engaged Deaf\, Blind\, and Non-Disabled Performers—we will ask how art enlivens the senses\, instigates thought\, enhances collaboration\, and opens toward a more flourishing future. \nSweet and Salty Waters\nDr. Irena Chawrilska \nThe programme “LOSt in Gdansk!” Sweet and Salty: A Tale of Two Waters offered the chance to explore the resonance between humans and more-than-humans on a local level\, prompting a rethink of humanism in line with the Blue Humanities. The coexistence of land\, sea\, rivers\, and lakes that characterises Gdańsk and Pomerania in Poland clearly demonstrates the importance of water as a more-than-human factor in all areas of life\, particularly in times of unrest caused by climate change\, military conflict\, and terrorism. We also examined how art responds to contemporary change. Building on this project\, we will explore the role of arts and glocal perspectives in inspiring action for sustainability amidst uncertainty and insecurity. \n“The Earth is Thinking All Along…”: Doing Philosophy in the Museum\, into the Wild\nDr. Rick Dolphjin \nIn 1985\, French philosopher Jean Francois Lyotard famously set up a major exhibition in the Centre Pompidou in Paris in which he translated his philosophy of technology into an exhibition (Les Immatériaux)\, because for him\, it was the best way to imagine the world to come otherwise. Today\, thinking about ecology\, about the more-than-human world\, cannot be limited to the boundaries of University either. Involving the arts and fieldwork allows us to broaden our perspectives and thus enrich our thinking\, creativity\, and involvement with all that matters. Drawing on an exhibition that will open in November 2025 in Skopje (entitled the Earth is Thinking All Along…) and on new European research projects-in-the-making\, my aim is to explore what we can possible learn from engaging with the landscape\, with the earth\, and question our Humanist prejudices while we engage with the world around us. \nPanel Discussion and Q&A \n  \nSpeaker Biographies \nProf. Gray Kochhar-Lindgren\nGray is Honorary Professor of the Humanities at the University of Hong Kong\, where from 2014-2022 he was Professor & Director of the Common Core. In 2023 Gray co-founded Wild Studios Consulting & Creative Productions and in 2025-26 he will serve as an Eminent Scholar in the Humanities and Professor of Philosophy at the University of Alabama: Huntsville. He is the author\, most recently\, of Pintxos: Small Delicacies and Chance Encounters and the lead editor for Transdisciplinary Experiments: Research\, Teaching\, and Institutionalisation (UCL Press\, forthcoming). \nDr. Irena Chawrilska\nIrena is the Director of the Academic Center for Polish Language and Culture and coordinator of the More-than-Human Studies Lab at the Center for Sustainable Development at the University of Gdansk\, Poland. She has been visiting scholar at Utrecht University and the University of Toronto and is the author of three books. Her research focuses on environmental humanities\, philosophy of land (especially wetlands)\, hybridity\, and experimental literature. \nDr. Rick Dolphjin\nRick is a writer\, educator\, and curator\, serving as an Associate Professor at Media and Culture Studies\, Humanities\, Utrecht University. He publishes widely on continental philosophy (Gilles Deleuze and Michel Serres) and the contemporary arts. He research focus is on posthumanism\, new materialism\, material culture (food studies)\, and ecology.

This session explores the “currents” of communication\, impacted by what we say\, how we say it and the rapport and trust with our audience. It explores how we can change the “tide” of our relationships through delivery and some approaches to significantly affect the success of our messaging. The hands-on workshop is designed for teachers and students to think about how to improve their communication and teaching of communication skills in coursework and beyond. \nThe session will cover: \n\nBiggest mistakes we see in communication\nWhat creates impact\nHow our brain processes information and how this affects our communication approach\nIdentifying and building the “undercurrent”\n“Trait F” and how it can help or hinder our communication\nBuilding your “undercurrent”\nPlanning your approach\n\nAbout Leesa \nLeesa is a seasoned strategy and leadership facilitator\, human performance coach\, and communications advisor with over 20 years of experience working with senior executives and professionals from Fortune 500 multinational corporations\, start-ups\, not-for-profit and high-profile individuals across diverse industries\, including finance\, healthcare/ pharmaceutical\, information technology\, finance\, property & infrastructure\, professional services\, government agencies\, and FMCGs. SUMMARY:Chinese Martial Arts - Culture And The Future
DESCRIPTION:Chinese Martial Arts – Culture And The Future \n19/02/2025 (Wed) 12:45-14:20 @ LE3 \nJoin us for an inspiring lecture with Kung Fu Master Rudy Ibarra\, as he shares his journey into Chinese Martial Arts and Kung Fu and its profound connection to Chinese cultural heritage. Master Ibarra will share how Kung Fu has acted as a cultural ambassador and reflect on how it serves as a living link into Chinese values\, identity\, and history. The talk will also highlight the practical aspects of Kung Fu for today’s world\, comparing it with other martial systems and types emphasising its relevance for the future\, despite modern skepticism of “Traditional Arts”. He will share his experiences training in Beijing and Fuzhou and teaching in NYC and now in Hong Kong as a foreigner. Master Ibarra will focus on his specialisation in Ziranmen\, or “Natural Style\,” and offer a live demonstration\, ending with a Q&A. \nMaster Rudy Ibarra is a distinguished martial artist with over thirty-five years of experience. As a child\, he was inspired by iconic Hong Kong Kung Fu movies like “36 Chambers”\, “5 Venoms\,” and the American TV series “Kung Fu”\, which exposed him to Buddhist\, Daoist\, and Chinese philosophy. Starting his martial arts journey in 1985\, he earned two black-belts in traditional Okinawan Karate. After having researched and understood the Chinese roots of Karate\, he began studying Chinese martial arts in New York City’s Chinatown in 1995 and later met a teacher from Fuzhou\, who introduced him to the rare art of Ziranmen. His commitment to mastering Chinese martial arts took him to Beijing Physical Education University in 1998 to study martial methods and again in 2001 to Tsinghua University to deepen his language studies and his knowledge of the internal martial arts. He also travelled to Hunan and Fujian Province researching Ziranmen\, eventually becoming the first Westerner formally accepted as a disciple by Grandmaster Lu Yao Qin of Ziranmen. In 2013\, he settled in Hong Kong and continues to teach Ziranmen\, embodying and promoting the profound cultural and philosophical roots of Chinese martial arts.
