DESCRIPTION:Forever Queer is a documentary that explores the lives of people within the Chinese LGBT community. Through a series of intimate interviews with various gay\, lesbian and non-binary people from China\, Taiwan\, and Hong Kong\, we question identities\, love\, marriage and other personal queer experiences\, while highlighting the constraints or freedoms that each place might bring. \n  \nThis film was featured in the 33rd Hong Kong Lesbian and Gay Film Festival and is exclusively screened in HKU as part of Queering Art\, Performance and Cities (CCHU 9079) and Common Core Future Readiness. \n  \nAbout the Director \nJean-Luc is an award-winning director and actor based in Asia for more than 10 years. He has worked in France\, Hong Kong\, Peking\, Shanghai\, Canton\, Taiwan\, \nSingapore… in advertising for international brands (Louis Vuitton\, Accor Hotels\, ING…)\, in movies with renowned directors (Olivier Assayas\, Pang Ho-Cheung…)\, as well as with international TV stations: TV5 Monde (France)\, Channel 4 (UK)\, NBCUniversal (USA)\, Hunan TV (China)\, Netflix… \nHe created Mar Vivo Films\, a production house that received several international awards (movie festivals\, advertising)\, with offices in Hong Kong\, Paris and Los Angeles. \n  \nAll HKU Common Core Students are welcome. These stories can help students to understand complex and abstract concepts by allowing them to immerse themselves and be part of it. Teachers can create interest-provoking and compelling cases and scenarios that will enable the students to reflect on their learning and perception to judge and act on the situation. However\, creating automated non-linear cases can be challenging and time-consuming. In this workshop\, we will use an open-source storytelling app called Twine to create these scenarios that can be customised to your context. DESCRIPTION:Student visual artist\, Mr. Clive Ka-lun LEE (PhD in education) is organising a community engaged visual arts exhibition\, “RESILIENCE: Farewell” to invite participants to contribute in co-creation and say goodbye to the feelings about COVID 19 and welcome a new page. \nArtist will also be on site to invite audience to bring their own materials in letting go any emotions through a process of four its – “facing it\, dealing with it\, accepting it\, and letting it go”\, as an encountering of well-being and resilience in the unique site of the university at this special moment.  The relationship between artist and audience co-create this unique moment of  “Ichigo Ichie” with relational aesthetics. \n  \nThe exhibition also showcases an artistic documentation of projects Clive previously facilitated during the pandemic with different walks of life\, e.g. ethnic minorities\, students with autism spectrum disorder\, women with unplanned pregnancy\, ex-drug addicts\, university students\, and others. \n  \n“RESILIENCE: Farewell” is jointly supported by Common Core Office\, HKU-CEDARS F.A.C.E. subsidy and Equal Opportunity Unit to encourage student-initiated projects.

SUMMARY:Food and Identity in Hong Kong Literature: Student-Led Discussion
DESCRIPTION:What food can best represent Hong Kong? Egg tart\, Pineapple bun\, or milk tea? In this casual academic dialogue\, we will move beyond these cliched representations of the city and critically engage with the complexities of postcolonial identity from a gastronomical perspective. While previous studies on food and Hong Kong identity have mostly relied on theoretical idioms such as hybridity and cosmopolitanism\, we will try to put the matter in a new light and see how it has emerged over time. By comparing poems and short stories composed by writers from different generations\, including Leung Ping-kwan (Ya Si)\, Dorothy Tse\, Eric Yip\, and others\, we will ruminate on the relationships between food and the geopolitics in postcolonial Hong Kong. Possible discussion questions may include: how do olfactory-taste sensations evoke our cultural memories and shape our identities? What are the connections between eating\, pleasure\, and violence in the context of post-1997 Hong Kong? Join our student-led discussion to savour the gourmet of Hong Kong literature and digest questions of postcolonialism and cultural identities together!

As communication is integral to disciplinary knowledge construction and transfer\, communicative competence cannot be separated from subject knowledge\, but needs to be developed as part of subject teaching. For various reasons\, however\, many subject lecturers reject\, or struggle with\, the responsibility to teach communication skills. The aim of my talk is to demonstrate how students’ communicative competence\, particularly in speaking and writing\, can be enhanced as part of lecturers’ regular teaching and assessment practices. I will propose five methods of integrating a focus on communication into teaching and assessment and show examples of the use of these methods across several disciplines. Both methods aim at the enhancement of students’ academic writing competence. The first involves the creation of teaching/learning resources that enable students to carry out analyses of annotated exemplars of assignment genres. I will provide various examples from a range of disciplines where this method was applied. The second method is concerned with the type of feedback lecturers provide on students’ written texts. I will show examples of lecturers’ difficulties in the exact identification of weaknesses in texts\, which prevent them from formulating formative feedback comments. SUMMARY:Transdisciplinarity And The Terrestrial: Thinking Critically With Critical Zones
DESCRIPTION:Following its adoption by the US earth sciences community at the turn of the century\, the concept of the ‘critical zone’ has been central to a so-called ‘terrestrial turn’ in the arts as well as the sciences. Originally defined as the “heterogeneous\, near-surface environment in which complex interactions involving rock\, soil\, water\, air\, and living organisms regulate the natural habitat” (Jordan et al.\, 2001: 2)\, the concept has been engaged by thinkers across the environmental sciences and humanities to consider questions of ‘habitability’. \n  \nIn this talk\, David will reflect on this circulation as a contribution to the uptake and use of the critical zone concept in transdisciplinary enquiry. What does this circulation tell us about dialogues between the arts and the sciences? And how can transdisciplinary enquiry engaging the concept of the critical zone be reflexive about the power relations underlying how the earth’s surface has been mapped\, explored\, and exploited? \n  \nThe talk will address ways in which the concept has been differently defined\, framed\, and situated around the world\, reflecting on the history of ‘critical zone observatories’ in the US\, Europe\, and China\, and the concept’s uptake in the arts and humanities inspired by the work of Bruno Latour. \n  \nDavid Edwards \nPhD Candidate\, The University of Glasgow \nDavid Edwards is a human and environmental geographer with a background in Sinology. In dialogue with political ecology\, postcolonial science and technology studies\, and the environmental humanities\, his PhD research addresses the translation and transfiguration of the ‘critical zone’ concept around the world\, with a focus on Greater China. David is based at the University of Glasgow and has been a visiting researcher at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP). DESCRIPTION:Earth Stories: Hong Kong \nWEBINAR \nA Transdisciplinary Art\, Ecology\, and Research Project \nEarth Stories: Hong Kong explores new habits of thought and feeling that emerge along the edges of Hong Kong’s cultural and natural worlds. Based at the KFBG Green Hub in Tai Po\, the project includes expressions by flora and fauna\, sky and earth\, poets\, film-makers\, voice-artists\, dancers\, and transdisciplinary undergraduate student researchers. \nKanta Kochhar-Lindgren (the Artistic Director of Folded Paper Theatre and Dance Limited) and Gray Kochhar-Lindgren (the former Director of the Common Core and currently an Honorary Professor of Humanities at HKU) will introduce the project and its collaborative team. In this talk\, I will start with a literature review on cultural heritage crowdsourcing. A preliminary conceptual framework will be presented to illustrate the intellectual development of this field. Later\, I will report two empirical investigations to discuss the critical issues regarding the sustainability of cultural heritage crowdsourcing projects. The first study will use the machine learning approach to explore imbalanced volunteer engagement in a well-known project. The second study will use the fsQCA approach to examine the configuration effects affecting the sustainability of cultural heritage crowdsourcing projects. \n  \nBio: Yuxiang Chris Zhao is a professor in the School of Information Management at Nanjing University\, China. His research interests include human-computer interaction\, health informatics\, and digital humanities. His publications have appeared in some leading journals and conferences as Journal of the Association for Information Science and Technology\, Information Processing & Management\, Journal of Documentation\, International Journal of Information Management\, Information Systems Frontiers\, Internet Research\, Computers in Human Behavior\, Journal of Medical Internet Research\, International Journal of Human-Computer Interaction\, Online Information Review\, Journal of Retailing and Consumer Services\, ICIS\, ASIS&T\, iConference\, PACIS\, JCDL\, CHIIR\, HCI International\, and among others. His Google Scholar citation count is over 3\,900 and the h-index is 24. Dr. Zhao has been awarded the distinguished young scholars in Chinese Humanities & Social Science domain in 2016. He is now serving on the editorial boards of ARIST\, JASIST\, IP&M\, Library Trends\, Journal of Data and Information Science\, and Data and Information Management. Currently\, Dr. Zhao is serving as Asia-Pacific Chapter Chair-elect of the Association for Information Science and Technology.
