SUMMARY:Web3: Transforming Business\, Justice\, and Art
DESCRIPTION:In this seminar on Web3\, our panel of experts will discuss recent advancements in blockchain technology and discuss its implications on conventional business models\, decentralized community governance\, and the art market. Following the presentations\, a moderated panel discussion will engage in a thought-provoking conversation to uncover insights into the broader implications of blockchain-based governance in socioeconomic and legal contexts\, as well as decentralized ecosystems. \nJoin us for this seminar\, as we explore the exciting possibilities and challenges of Web 3.0 and the role of blockchain technology in shaping our future. \nSpeakers and Panelists: \n\nDr Daniel C. Burnett: Dr Daniel C. Burnett is the Executive Director of Enterprise Ethereum Alliance\, a recognised blockchain leader and prominent standards expert. With over two decades of experience in web and Internet standards\, Daniel has a stellar reputation as an action-oriented leader helping to build ecosystems for blockchain and the standards that drive interoperability and adoption. He has served as a Blockchain Standards Architect at ConsenSys\, an Ethereum-focused blockchain organisation where he developed standards that enabled businesses to take advantage of blockchain’s potential.\n\n  \n\nMs Jamilya Kamalova: Jamilya Kamalova is a researcher at Kleros.io\, specialising in decentralised dispute resolution. She is a PhD candidate in Blockchain & Law\, affiliated with Kleros.io\, Blockchaingov.eu\, and Université Paris 2 Panthéon Assas. Jamilya has been accepted for the Adam Smith Fellowship\, a co-sponsored program of the Mercatus Center and Liberty Fund\, Inc.\, for 2023-2024. She is also a visiting scholar at HKU Faculty of Law for fall 2023/2024. Jamilya’s academic research encompasses blockchain governance\, decentralised dispute resolution\, constitutionalisation\, and legal regulatory regimes.\n\n  \n\nDr Tom McDonald: Tom is a media anthropologist who is dedicated to using ethnographic engagement to gain a deeper understanding of how digital technologies\, media\, and material culture are transforming various aspects of human life in China and beyond. He joined the Department of Sociology at HKU in August 2015\, and prior to that\, he was a Research Associate at the Department of Anthropology\, University College London. Tom’s research has increasingly focused on economic concerns\, particularly in light of the rapid convergence between digital money and media in China and the wider world. He has recently completed two major projects in this area. The first project examines the adoption of digital payment and consumer finance platforms and their impact on financial subjectivities. The second project explores the potential of digital money in facilitating everyday cross-boundary money transactions. Currently\, Tom is in the early stages of a new project that examines how NFTs are transforming processes of collection\, exchange\, and production in the Hong Kong art market.\n\nDate: 30 October\, 2023 (Monday) \nTime: 2:00 pm – 4:00 pm \nVenue: MB150\, Main Building \nPlease register at https://hkuems1.hku.hk/hkuems/ec_hdetail.aspx?ueid=90987 before Oct 29\, 2023.

SUMMARY:Digital Intangible Cultural Heritage & Museums: Mistakes of the Past\, Trends of the Present and Prospects for the Future
DESCRIPTION:Public Lecture – Digital Intangible Cultural Heritage & Museums: Mistakes of the Past\, Trends of the Present and Prospects for the Future \nPart of CCCH9051 Digitizing Cultural Heritage in Greater China \n  \nDate: April 10\, 2024 \nTime: 4:30-5:45 pm \nVenue: CYCP1\, Chong Yuet Ming Chemistry Building \nSpeaker: Dr. Harald Peter Kraemer\, Curator\, University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) \n  \nAbstract: \nAs projects stored on CD-ROM and CD-I\, or websites created with Flash have shown\, the increasing dependence of museums on the latest media technologies in the ‘Age of digital Throwawayism’ has repeatedly led to the loss of digital intangible cultural heritage. Now that the hype surrounding NFTs has nearly died away\, more experiments are being conducted with AR and VR. Additionally\, immersive walk-in spaces contribute to a ‘Disneyfication’ of museum environments\, exerting a significant influence on visitor behaviour. Are museums currently turning into amusement parks? In his lecture\, Harald P Kraemer explores these questions and shows possible perspectives for the future of museums. \n  \nAbout the speaker: \nSince completing his PhD on museum informatics and digital collections\, Harald P Kraemer has been investigating the interplay of media technologies and their influence on museums. He works as an exhibition curator at UMAG and teaches the courses ‘Digital Media and Museums’ as well as ‘The Art of Storytelling’ in the HKU MA Museum Studies programme. \n  \nAll staff and students are welcome. No registration is required.
