SUMMARY:Active Learning in Large Introductory Sciences Courses
DESCRIPTION:The talk by Professor Robert Chen of University of Massachusetts Boston “Active Learning in Large Introductory Sciences Courses” was successfully held on 11 March 2024. The event was co-organized by the Common Core and Teaching and Learning Innovation Centre (TALIC). \n  \nDate: 11 March 2024 (Monday) \nTime: 4:00pm – 5:30pm \nVenue: RRS321\, 3/F\, Run Run Shaw Building\, Main Campus\, HKU \nSpeaker: Professor Robert Chen\, University of Massachusetts Boston \nPresentation Slides: Chen-Teaching Inro Classes 2024-HKU \nRecording: https://www2.talic.hku.hk/eventvideo/2024/03/2024-03-11_commoncore.php \nFeedback Survey: https://forms.gle/oiTrRW9pvHBt2pjs6 \n  \nAbstract \nIntroductory science courses provide an excellent opportunity to prepare both majors and non-majors for thinking about some of the largest issues facing society such as climate change\, artificial intelligence\, and healthcare. Introductory courses can also serve to recruit students from highly diverse backgrounds into these important fields. Often\, these courses are large (>50 students). This workshop will provide strategies to overcome challenges of these large introductory courses while making your teaching engaging\, relevant\, and effective for all students. A special emphasis is placed on a few big concepts that can help organize examples and knowledge for students to grapple with future scientific issues.  Come ready to share ideas\, to think actively about teaching and learning\, and to discuss what works and why. \n  \nAbout the Speaker \nRobert F. (Bob) Chen is a Professor and the Interim Dean of the School for the Environment at the University of Massachusetts Boston. He received his AB from Harvard University in Chemistry and Physics in 1986 and his PhD in Oceanography from Scripps Institution of Oceanography in 1992. His research interests include the cycling of chromophoric dissolved organic matter (CDOM)\, carbon biogeochemistry in coastal systems\, and the development of sensor networks in shallow water systems. He has explored dissolved organic carbon (DOC) outwelling from salt marshes\, remote sensing of coastal water quality\, and indicators of estuarine health. He is also dedicated to ocean and environmental science education and outreach at the local\, national\, and international levels. He is the Principal Investigator of the NASA PATHS Diversifying Engineering project (www.pathspartners.org)\, and serves on the boards of the New England Aquarium\, and the Alliance for Business Leadership. He is the Chair of the Education and Engagement Committee of the Association of the Sciences for Limnology and Oceanography (ASLO)\, and served on its board. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed articles and maintains an active laboratory in the area of coastal observations\, carbon cycling\, and contaminant distribution and fate. He works with communities to tell stories of coastal resilience\, STEM diversity\, and environmental justice. \n  \nAll Staff are welcome! \n  \nRegistration: https://hkuems1.hku.hk/hkuems/ec_hdetail.aspx?ueid=93092 \n

SUMMARY:Digital Intangible Cultural Heritage & Museums: Mistakes of the Past\, Trends of the Present and Prospects for the Future
DESCRIPTION:Public Lecture – Digital Intangible Cultural Heritage & Museums: Mistakes of the Past\, Trends of the Present and Prospects for the Future \nPart of CCCH9051 Digitizing Cultural Heritage in Greater China \n  \nDate: April 10\, 2024 \nTime: 4:30-5:45 pm \nVenue: CYCP1\, Chong Yuet Ming Chemistry Building \nSpeaker: Dr. Harald Peter Kraemer\, Curator\, University Museum and Art Gallery (UMAG) \n  \nAbstract: \nAs projects stored on CD-ROM and CD-I\, or websites created with Flash have shown\, the increasing dependence of museums on the latest media technologies in the ‘Age of digital Throwawayism’ has repeatedly led to the loss of digital intangible cultural heritage. Now that the hype surrounding NFTs has nearly died away\, more experiments are being conducted with AR and VR. Additionally\, immersive walk-in spaces contribute to a ‘Disneyfication’ of museum environments\, exerting a significant influence on visitor behaviour. Are museums currently turning into amusement parks? In his lecture\, Harald P Kraemer explores these questions and shows possible perspectives for the future of museums. \n  \nAbout the speaker: \nSince completing his PhD on museum informatics and digital collections\, Harald P Kraemer has been investigating the interplay of media technologies and their influence on museums. He works as an exhibition curator at UMAG and teaches the courses ‘Digital Media and Museums’ as well as ‘The Art of Storytelling’ in the HKU MA Museum Studies programme. \n  \nAll staff and students are welcome. No registration is required.

SUMMARY:Sustainability x Game: Climate Change\, Take Action!
DESCRIPTION:Climate change is one of the most important and urgent issues affecting our world. It refers to the long-term alterations in climate\, such as variations in temperature\, precipitation\, and weather patterns. By taking action against climate change\, we can lessen the worst effects of climate change and build a more resilient\, sustainable\, and fair future for both present and future generations. \n\nIn the session\, we will play an open-source card game on climate change. This game aims to educate players about the importance of climate change and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that guide global efforts towards a sustainable future. Players will learn about the SDG targets in SDGs 7\, 12\, and 13\, particularly relevant to addressing climate change. Players will also understand how collaboration can support the achievement of other SDGs. \nDate: 16 April\, 2024 (Tuesday) \nTime: 12:30 pm – 1:45 pm \nVenue: Common Core / BASc Lounge\, Room 150\, 1/F Main Building \nRegistration: https://hkuems1.hku.hk/hkuems/ec_hdetail.aspx?UEID=93590
