SUMMARY:Cultural Heritage Crowdsourcing for Sustainable Development Goals: Conceptual Framework and Empirical Investigations
DESCRIPTION:Monday\, 29 May 2023\, 12:45 pm – 2:30 pm \nRoom 202\, Runme Shaw Building or Zoom \nAll are welcome \nPre-registration required for joining via Zoom \nhttps://bit.ly/crowdsourcingSDG  \n  \nAbstract: Crowdsourcing is vital in facilitating the sustainable development goals of digital humanities projects. In this talk\, I will start with a literature review on cultural heritage crowdsourcing. A preliminary conceptual framework will be presented to illustrate the intellectual development of this field. Later\, I will report two empirical investigations to discuss the critical issues regarding the sustainability of cultural heritage crowdsourcing projects. The first study will use the machine learning approach to explore imbalanced volunteer engagement in a well-known project. The second study will use the fsQCA approach to examine the configuration effects affecting the sustainability of cultural heritage crowdsourcing projects. \n  \nBio: Yuxiang Chris Zhao is a professor in the School of Information Management at Nanjing University\, China. SUMMARY:(Webinar) Earth Stories: Hong Kong
DESCRIPTION:Earth Stories: Hong Kong \nWEBINAR \nA Transdisciplinary Art\, Ecology\, and Research Project \nEarth Stories: Hong Kong explores new habits of thought and feeling that emerge along the edges of Hong Kong’s cultural and natural worlds. SUMMARY:Transdisciplinarity And The Terrestrial: Thinking Critically With Critical Zones
DESCRIPTION:Following its adoption by the US earth sciences community at the turn of the century\, the concept of the ‘critical zone’ has been central to a so-called ‘terrestrial turn’ in the arts as well as the sciences. Originally defined as the “heterogeneous\, near-surface environment in which complex interactions involving rock\, soil\, water\, air\, and living organisms regulate the natural habitat” (Jordan et al.\, 2001: 2)\, the concept has been engaged by thinkers across the environmental sciences and humanities to consider questions of ‘habitability’. \n  \nIn this talk\, David will reflect on this circulation as a contribution to the uptake and use of the critical zone concept in transdisciplinary enquiry. What does this circulation tell us about dialogues between the arts and the sciences? And how can transdisciplinary enquiry engaging the concept of the critical zone be reflexive about the power relations underlying how the earth’s surface has been mapped\, explored\, and exploited? \n  \nThe talk will address ways in which the concept has been differently defined\, framed\, and situated around the world\, reflecting on the history of ‘critical zone observatories’ in the US\, Europe\, and China\, and the concept’s uptake in the arts and humanities inspired by the work of Bruno Latour. \n  \nDavid Edwards \nPhD Candidate\, The University of Glasgow \nDavid Edwards is a human and environmental geographer with a background in Sinology. In dialogue with political ecology\, postcolonial science and technology studies\, and the environmental humanities\, his PhD research addresses the translation and transfiguration of the ‘critical zone’ concept around the world\, with a focus on Greater China. David is based at the University of Glasgow and has been a visiting researcher at the Institut de Physique du Globe de Paris (IPGP). In the last year\, he has delivered presentations at the American Association of Geographers (AAG) Annual Meeting\, the East Asian Regional Conference in Alternate Geography (EARCAG)\, and the Royal Geographical Society-Institute of British Geographer’s Annual International Conference. \n  \nAll are welcome. \nIf you are interested\, please sign-up at: https://forms.gle/E36ZvkYRjYdnRjd68

SUMMARY:Communication-intensive Courses Symposium 2023
DESCRIPTION:Date: 3 May\, 2023 (Wednesday)\nTime: 9:30 am – 4:30 pm\nVenue: Digital Interactive Lab\, Main Library\nTarget Audience: All HKU staff (including those who have badged CIC courses and those who haven’t) \n>>Details and registration \nProgramme\n\n\n\nTime\nActivity\n\n\n9:30 – 9:35\nOpening \n\nSpeaker:\nProf. Ian Holliday \nVice-President and Pro-Vice-Chancellor (Teaching and Learning)\, HKU\n\n\n\n\n9:35 – 10:20\nKeynote: Integrating development of students’ communication skills into course teaching and assessment\nI will begin by discussing the need for integrating the development of communication skills into subject teaching\, as these skills are discipline-specific and require students’ understanding of the discipline’s communicative conventions and discourses. As communication is integral to disciplinary knowledge construction and transfer\, communicative competence cannot be separated from subject knowledge\, but needs to be developed as part of subject teaching. For various reasons\, however\, many subject lecturers reject\, or struggle with\, the responsibility to teach communication skills. The aim of my talk is to demonstrate how students’ communicative competence\, particularly in speaking and writing\, can be enhanced as part of lecturers’ regular teaching and assessment practices. I will propose five methods of integrating a focus on communication into teaching and assessment and show examples of the use of these methods across several disciplines. Lastly\, I will explain how subject lecturers\, who are often not explicitly aware of their discipline’s communicative conventions\, can be supported by language/English for Academic Purposes specialists in applying these methods. \n\nSpeaker: \n\n\nDr. Ursula Wingate\nSchool of Education\, Communication & Society\, King’s College London\n\n\n\n\n\n10:20 – 10:30\n10 min break\n\n\n10:30 – 11:00\nTeacher voices: Developing content knowledge through writing\nTeachers share their experience enhancing senior level students’ written communication competence in law and medicine courses. \n\nSpeakers: \n\n\nDr. Masayo Kotaka\nSchool of Biomedical Sciences\, LKS Faculty of Medicine\, HKU\n\n\n\n\n\nWilson Lui\nFaculty of Law\, HKU\n\n\n\n\n\n11:00 – 11:15\nStudent voices: Can writing be enjoyable?\nStudents share their experiences developing their writing skills in CiC Common Core and faculty courses. \n\nSpeakers: \n\n\n\nOcean Wang\nYear 3\, BSocSc\, Art History and Sociology\, HKU\n\n\n\n\n\nHanna Marcella Kurniawan\nYear 2\, BSc\, Food & Nutritional Science and Finance\, HKU\n\n\n\n\n\n11:15 – 11:25\n10 min break\n\n\n11:25 – 12:25\nPeer consultant voices: It takes a student to teach a student\nThe Writing Centre coordinator and writing peer consultants share how consultations are structured to help students with their written academic assignments in multiple disciplines. \n\nSpeakers: \n\nSam Cole\, Writing Centre Coordinator\, CAES \, HKU\nJack Chan\, Year 3\, BA&BEd\, English\, HKU\nCeleste Lee\, Year 4\, BSocSc\, Psychology and English\, HKU\nTristan Li\, Year 5\, BBA&LLB\, HKU\nYoshita Singh\, Year 3\, BEcon&Fin\, HKU\nHayley Hunt\, Year 3\, PhD Earth Science\, HKU\n\n\n\n\n12:25 – 14:00\n1.5 hrs Lunch\n\n\n14:00 – 15:30\nEnhancing students’ academic writing through genre analysis and targeted feedback\nIn this workshop\, I offer more details on\, and some hands-on experience of\, two of the methods that I proposed in my talk. Both methods aim at the enhancement of students’ academic writing competence. The first involves the creation of teaching/learning resources that enable students to carry out analyses of annotated exemplars of assignment genres. I will provide various examples from a range of disciplines where this method was applied. The second method is concerned with the type of feedback lecturers provide on students’ written texts. I will show examples of lecturers’ difficulties in the exact identification of weaknesses in texts\, which prevent them from formulating formative feedback comments. Participants will be asked to collaboratively analyse some extracts from student texts\, pinpoint their shortcomings and formulate feedback comments that help students to address these shortcomings. \n\nSpeaker: \n\n\nDr. Ursula Wingate\nSchool of Education\, Communication & Society King’s College London\n\n \n\n\n\n\n15:30 – 16:15\nChatGPT\, write me an essay on…\nPanel discussion on how generative AI will impact the teaching and learning of written communication in higher education \n\nSpeakers: \n\nDr. Michelle Raquel\nCAES\, HKU\n\nDr. Jack Tsao\nCommon Core\, HKU\n\nDr. Miranda Legg\nCAES\, HKU\n\nMr. Donn Gonda\nCETL\, HKU\n\n\n\n\n16:15\nClosing \n\nSpeakers: \nProf. Julian Tanner\nDirector\, Common Core\, HKU\n\n\n\n\n\n

SUMMARY:Food and Identity in Hong Kong Literature: Student-Led Discussion
DESCRIPTION:What food can best represent Hong Kong? Egg tart\, Pineapple bun\, or milk tea? In this casual academic dialogue\, we will move beyond these cliched representations of the city and critically engage with the complexities of postcolonial identity from a gastronomical perspective. While previous studies on food and Hong Kong identity have mostly relied on theoretical idioms such as hybridity and cosmopolitanism\, we will try to put the matter in a new light and see how it has emerged over time. By comparing poems and short stories composed by writers from different generations\, including Leung Ping-kwan (Ya Si)\, Dorothy Tse\, Eric Yip\, and others\, we will ruminate on the relationships between food and the geopolitics in postcolonial Hong Kong. Possible discussion questions may include: how do olfactory-taste sensations evoke our cultural memories and shape our identities? What are the connections between eating\, pleasure\, and violence in the context of post-1997 Hong Kong? Join our student-led discussion to savour the gourmet of Hong Kong literature and digest questions of postcolonialism and cultural identities together!

SUMMARY:Untitled: A.I. and Transformations to Teaching and Learning
DESCRIPTION:Untitled: A.I. and Transformations to Teaching and Learning \n  \nThe rapid technological advances in AI deep generative models have significant and disruptive implications for teaching and learning within higher education. While there are questions and issues around academic honesty\, plagiarism\, creativity\, and originality – the potential to enhance student learning is substantial. \nJoin us for this hands-on workshop as we demonstrate the possibilities of text generation (GPT-3) and text-to-image applications (Stable Diffusion\, Midjourney\, DALL-E-2). We hope to provoke thinking and conversations around interdisciplinary and disciplinary applications for teachers. Moreover\, we hope the examples will shed light on the urgent need to re-design curriculums and assessments. \nDate/ Time: 14 December 2022 (10 am – 11 am) Via Zoom \nFacilitators:\nDr Jack Tsao\, Associate Director\, Common Core\nMr Donn Gonda\, Instructional Designer\, Centre for Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CETL) \nRegistration: https://hkuems1.hku.hk/hkuems/ec_hdetail.aspx?ueid=85473 \nOpen to all HKU teachers \nThis workshop is a collaboration between Communication Intensive Courses (CiC)\, Common Core\, and the Centre for the Enhancement for Teaching and Learning.

SUMMARY:Creating non-linear stories using Twine to support case-based learning
DESCRIPTION:Date: 30 November 2022 (Wednesday) \nTime: 12:30 pm – 1:45 pm \nVenue: RRS 321\, 3/F Run Run Shaw Building\, Main Campus\, HKU \nSpeaker: Mr. Donn Gonda\, CETL \nRegistration: https://www2.cetl.hku.hk/cetlevents/regist/492/registEvent.php?eventId=492 \nAbstract \nStorytelling can be a powerful tool to enhance students’ communication skills. These stories can help students to understand complex and abstract concepts by allowing them to immerse themselves and be part of it. Teachers can create interest-provoking and compelling cases and scenarios that will enable the students to reflect on their learning and perception to judge and act on the situation. However\, creating automated non-linear cases can be challenging and time-consuming. In this workshop\, we will use an open-source storytelling app called Twine to create these scenarios that can be customised to your context. We will work through a model example to let you experience and build your own non-linear story. \nFor information\, please contact: \nMs. Lavina Luk\, CETL \nPhone: 3917 5272; Email: ytluk89@hku.hk
