Homo cegus
PARK Ji Hyeon (Molecular Biology & Biotechnology, Year 2)

The title is a fictional species name that stems from the words Homo sapiens and ‘cegar’ in Latin, meaning ‘to go blind’. Made with acrylic paint with digital touch-ups, this portrait expresses the unforeseen circumstances brought forth by the pandemic – represented by the mask placed as a blindfold. Clueless as if in the dark, we all remember the feeling of vulnerability during the peak waves, as if the virus was floating around every corner. The contrast of the realistically painted person and the playful colours of the abstract background further emphasising how vulnerable we are in the hands of nature.
