Common Core Global Engagement Scheme

Introduction

In order to provide UG students with more learning opportunities outside of Hong Kong, starting from the 2024-25 year, we invite Co-ordinators of Common Core (CC) courses to nominate student(s) of their best projects to apply for Common Core Global Engagement Scheme for funding to support fieldtrips, experiential learning activities, or other events (such as conference, competition, forum, etc.) in physical format with global impact and theme(s) related to the respective CC course that foster collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking. The activities may take place in the Mainland or internationally.

[Note: Activities that are academic research in nature are not supported by this scheme. Students interested in conducting UG research projects are encouraged to submit applications for CC Transdisciplinary Experiential Learning Fund or Transdisciplinary Undergraduate Research Initiative.]

Guidelines and Conditions

  • Nomination: Course co-ordinators may nominate up to FIVE full-time regular UG students from each of their CC courses (the nominees may participate in individually proposed activities or in one proposed activity as a team)
    [Note: Exchange students are not eligible to be nominated under this scheme.]
  • Type of Activity: The proposed activity must be in physical format which take place in the Mainland or internationally (e.g. fieldtrip, conference, forum, competition, etc.) with global impact and theme(s) related to the respective CC course that foster collaboration, creativity, and critical thinking
  • Approval Criteria: Nominations will be reviewed by a Selection Committee on the basis of feasibility, potential for global impact, and relevance to the respective Common Core course
  • Funding limits: HK$300 – HK$3,000 per student depending on the nature, location and duration of the activities
    [Note: Only essential operational expenses will be subsidized. In general, equipment and consumables are not supported.]
  • Funding will be provided in the form of reimbursement upon the Common Core Office within one month after activity’s conclusion and receipt of relevant receipts (original copies) of approved expenses items, a 300- to 500-word essay reflecting on the activity together with at least 5 photos (with the student personally appearing in them) documenting the experience

Nomination

  • Course co-ordinators should complete the nomination form and send it to commoncore@hku.hk
  • Submission of nominations:
    For 2024-25 semester 1 CC courses: Now – December 6, 2024
    For 2024-25 semester 2 CC courses: February 17 – May 10, 2025
  • Nominations will be reviewed on a rolling basis

Conditions of Participation

Students selected to undertake activities supported by the Common Core Global Engagement Scheme must be committed and always act respectfully to the peers, staff, activity organizer, and other parties involved. Students should also be respectful to the different cultural contexts and conduct themselves in the highest esteem as representatives of the University. Common Core reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to terminate or disqualify any student’s enrollment/participation to any of the activities. This may occur due to various reasons, including but not limited to, changes in the requirements of the activities, availability of resources, academic performance, student conduct and behaviour, or unforeseen circumstances. By participating in the Common Core Global Engagement Scheme, students acknowledge and accept these conditions.
