Common Core Global Engagement Award

Introduction

The Global Engagement Award is recognition open to curious, passionate, or outstanding undergraduate students in Common Core courses. The award provides these students opportunities to engage in further learning experiences related to the course beyond Hong Kong.

The funding supports the following activities that takes place in Mainland China or internationally.:

  • Fieldtrips
  • University visits (but not for formal exchange study purposes)
  • Experiential learning activities
  • Conferences/ symposiums
  • Competitions
  • Other impactful Mainland and international events 

[Note: For research and experiential activities not directly related to your Common Core courses or events/projects in Hong Kong, refer to funding under the Common Core Transdisciplinary Experiential Learning Fund or the Transdisciplinary Undergraduate Research Initiative.]

Guidelines and Conditions

Eligibility

  • Activities must align with the CC course taken by the student and have clear learning outcomes.
  • Students must specify how the travel beyond Hong Kong is meaningful in achieving their specific learning outcomes and not merely be a sightseeing trip.
  • Application forms must be completed by student(s) and endorsed by Common Core course co-ordinators. (Course co-ordinators may endorse up to eight full-time undergraduate students from each CC course).
  • The proposed activity can be individual or team-based with other HKU students.
  • Exchange students are not eligible for this award.
  • The proposed activity must be in physical format in the Mainland or internationally (e.g. fieldtrip, conference, forum, competition, etc.) or attended virtual for a Mainland or overseas event (e.g. online international conference).

Approval Criteria

  • Applications will be reviewed by a Selection Committee based on the following criteria: i) Feasibility of the proposed activity; ii) Relevance to the nominated student’s Common Core course; iii) Performance of the student and strength of the endorsement.

Funding Details

  • Funding ranges from HK$500 to HK$5,000 per student, depending on the activity’s nature, location, and duration.
  • Only essential operational expenses will be subsidised (e.g., travel, accommodation, registration fees).
  • Equipment and consumables are not supported.
  • Funding will be provided via reimbursement upon submission of:
    1. Original receipts for approved expenses;
    2. A 300- to 500-word reflective essay on the activity;
    3. At least 5 photos of the activity, with the student appearing in them;
    4. Any deliverables promised.
  • Submission of deliverables must occur within one month after the activity concludes. Failure to submit the deliverables as promised and in a timely manner will result in withholding or forfeiture of reimbursement.

Application Process

1. Students must complete the application form.

2. Obtain endorsement from their Course Co-ordinators.

3. Submit the completed form to commoncore@hku.hk.

Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.

Conditions of Participation

Students selected to undertake activities supported by the Common Core Global Engagement Award must be committed and always act respectfully. Students should also be respectful to the different cultural contexts and conduct themselves in the highest esteem as representatives of the University. Common Core reserves the right, in its sole and absolute discretion, to terminate or disqualify any student’s enrolment/participation to any of the activities. This may occur due to various reasons, including but not limited to, changes in the requirements of the activities, availability of resources, academic performance, student conduct and behaviour, or unforeseen circumstances. By participating in activities under the Common Core Global Engagement Award, students acknowledge and accept these conditions.
