I am a final-year Molecular Biology and Biotechnology major and spend most of my time in lab working on transgenic plants. Yes, I can hear you gasping at that—although to me genetic engineering is the coolest thing we have come up with in science, I am fully aware how much doubt and fear the general public might have for my field, something I learnt and explored in my Common Core courses. As a Common Core Student Consultant, I hope to provide my fellow schoolmates a perspective on genetic engineering as a practicing scientist, and to learn from people outside my field about their view on the subject so that I may resolve their doubt, if any.
