CCCH6001 Human Monkeys: Unethical Research in Manchuria

In early June, Prof Zohar Lederman, alongside Dr Aaron Hames and Prof Jerry Menikoff from NUS, took 26 students to Harbin, China to learn about the human experimentation that took place in Unit 731. Besides visiting the museum and remnants of experimentation sites, the week-long course entailed an immersive exploration of the history of Unit 731, usage of unethically obtained data, informed consent, the banality of evil, and challenge trials. These activities culminated in a mock trial on the Japanese researchers, which sparked intense debate amongst participants and professors alike.
