ThinkOcean HKU x HKU Common Core: Conservation Efforts in the Amazon
7 November @ 3:00 pm - 4:15 pm
Join us for an enlightening talk in collaboration with Ictioxingu, a conservation project led by Prof. Leandro Sousa from the Federal University of Pará, Altamira. We’ll dive into the incredible fish diversity of the Xingu River, a main tributary of the Amazon River, showcasing the vibrant species that inhabit its waters. You’ll learn about the critical conservation efforts underway to protect these species, which face threats from the construction of the Belo Monte Dam and the impact of the ornamental fish trade.
Additionally, we’ll explore the sustainable practices of Amazonian indigenous communities, highlighting their deep, enduring relationship with the Amazon River and its resources. We’ll also discuss the vital role of natural history museums collections in helping scientists like us conserve these threatened species. This talk will provide a unique perspective on the challenges and opportunities in preserving one of the most biodiverse ecosystems on the planet.
Please remember reserve your spot via the google forms linked in the poster and email as there are limited spaces available!
